General elections

A General election is a vote run at least, every five years to elect a new government. (The last election was held on 7 may 2015, where the conservative party won).

Everyone in the UK who is registered to vote can have a say in choosing the next government. One Member of Parliament (MP) is elected from each of the UK's parliamentary constituencies. the candidate who gets more votes, than becomes an MP.  This is called first past the post. When the  MPs have been chosen, the leader of the largest political party gets asked to form a government.

The next General election is in 2020
